National Geographic Magazine This photo of the Mississippi Petrified Forest was published in the September 1937 issue of the National Geographic Magazine BANEFUL EROSION TURNS BENEFACTOR AND REVEALS A NATURAL WONDER Rain and wind did the vast excavation which paints the landscape red around Flora. Washing away the loose brown loess soil carved the Petrified Forest in ragged relief. In earlier ages a stream heavily impregnated with lime formed the petrified sculpture which thus was uncovered.
